Hyginus’ Fabula 15 - The Women of Lemnos

Translated by Daniel-James Thornton

On the island of Lemnos the women had not made sacrifice to Aphrodite for several years, and because of her anger their husbands married Thracian wives and scorned their previous ones. But the women of Lemnos, at the instigation of Aphrodite, conspired to kill everyone of masculine gender in the land—all except Hypsipyle, who secretly put her father on a ship, whom a storm then carried to the isle of Taurika. 2. Meanwhile the Argonauts came to Lemnos on their voyage. At what time Iphinoë, custodian of the gate, perceived them; she announced their arrival to Queen Hypsipyle, to whom Polyxo, whose age conferred upon her the authority of councillor, recommended that she impose upon them the obligation of the gods of hospitality, and welcome them as guests. 3. Hypsipyle conceived two sons by Iason, Euneos and Deipylos. 4. After they had been delayed there for many days, they were rebuked by Herakles, and departed. 5. The women of Lemnos, however, after they learned that Hypsipyle had saved her father, attempted to kill her; but she decided to flee. Pirates who captured her brought her to Thebes and sold her into slavery to King Lykos. 6. The Lemnian women thereafter gave the names of the Argonauts to the children they had conceived with them.
